Namibia has taken a major step forward in its energy sector with the discovery of a significant oil reserve in the Orange Basin. Custos Energy, in partnership with Galp Energia and the National Petroleum Corporation of Namibia (NAMCOR), made the announcement on February 25, 2025.
This discovery, found through the drilling of the Mopane-3X well, adds to the growing list of successful explorations in the region.
The drilling, which began in early January, focused on multiple potential oil-rich sites around 18 kilometers from a previous discovery. Scientists analyzing the well have confirmed the presence of large amounts of light oil and gas in high-quality rock formations. These findings suggest a strong potential for oil extraction, with early tests showing good flow and minimal impurities. Unexpected pressure levels in the well also indicate the possibility of even more untapped resources in the area.
To better understand the full potential of this discovery, experts are conducting advanced seismic surveys, expected to be completed in early 2025. These surveys will help map out further drilling opportunities and guide future exploration efforts.
