The Kenyan cabinet has approved a plan for an increase in the duty-free import limit from Sh50,000 to Sh250,000.
Travellers had previously complained that items would be confiscated if they exceeded the Sh50,000 limit.
The plan will mean passengers bringing in personal items worth up to Sh250,000 will not have to pay customs duty.
According to reports, the Cabinet has approved a comprehensive plan to improve the passenger experience at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) by streamlining operations and strengthening security.

“Security screening at JKIA will be enhanced through risk-based profiling and only marked baggage will be manually screened in dedicated screening rooms, reducing delays and improving efficiency,” the statement said. The changes also include exempting all African nationals from the requirement to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA), facilitating travel within Africa.
Cabinet announced that the number of immigration counters and officers will be doubled to expedite travel further. In addition, electronic gates will be introduced to avoid long queues and speed up processing.
“Furthermore, we will introduce new surveillance technology to monitor airport personnel and strengthen accountability measures by requiring all agency personnel and retail salespeople to wear uniforms with visible nametags,” the statement added.
The Cabinet also announced that JKIA’s infrastructure will also be significantly improved. These include modernizing the baggage handling system, improving stormwater drainage and access roads, installing covered walkways, improving the air conditioning system and clarifying signage.
Cabinet also approved several host country agreements that strengthen Kenya’s role as a regional hub for international organizations.

These include agreements with the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance, Save the Children International, Shelter Africa Development Bank, Oxfam International, the Norwegian Refugee Council and the International Population Service.
In addition, the Cabinet approved the ratification of an agreement with Singapore to eliminate double taxation and prevent tax evasion, further strengthening Kenya’s international trade and investment ties.
Cabinet also approved Kenya to host the International Air Transport Association (IATA), highlighting the country’s efforts towards enhancing international cooperation and economic diplomacy.
