DP World, a global provider of end-to-end logistics solutions, has signed an agreement with the Senegalese government to build a deepwater port in Ndayane, approximately 50 kilometres from the existing port and close to the international airport (Blaise Diagne).
DP World’s proposal for the Port of Dhaka already includes a plan to build a new container terminal next to the existing terminal of the Port of Dhaka. However, following the meeting of the Minister, Senegalese President Macky Sall and DP World Group Chairman and CEO Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem agreed that it would be more important to implement a plan for the development of Senegal and to build a new port outside the city.
After constructive and detailed discussions, Senegalese Minister of Fisheries and Maritime Economy Alioune Ndoye, Director of the Autonomous Port of Dhaka (PAD) Aboubacar Sedikh Beye and the Chairman of DP World signed the promised document in Dhaka for the development of the new port. . .
DP World Dakar SA, a local joint venture between DP World and PAD, will not only build and operate the 300-hectare container terminals but will also finance, design and develop the onshore and offshore infrastructure of the new 600-hectare port. DP World Dakar will invest US$837 million in the first phase of the project, making it the largest investment in Senegal’s history.
The first phase will include a new container terminal with 840 meters of quay and a new 5-kilometer-long channel, capable of accommodating vessels up to 366 meters, the largest in the world. The second phase will add a 410-meter container terminal and further dredging of the channel to accommodate 400-meter vessels.
The first phase of the Ndayane Container Terminal will operate next to the existing DP World Dhaka Container Terminal. The container terminal will eventually have more than 3 kilometres of quay and 300 hectares of container storage, as the government hopes to make Ndayane Port the hub of Senegal’s port operations for the next 100 years.
The existing Dhaka Port is aimed at being transformed into a mixed-use development and coastal and cruise ship hub. DP Global also plans to build a special economic zone near the Ndayan inland port to increase Senegal’s attractiveness to foreign investors targeting the ECOWAS region.
The development of a special economic zone with a world-class port and airport would be another powerful driver of Senegal’s economic growth and job creation for future generations of Senegalese citizens.
The Prime Minister and Special Representative of Senegal, Cheikh Canter, said that the development of the new port in Ndayane will allow Senegal to maintain its position as a maritime gateway to the region and will contribute positively to achieving the goals of the Kingdom of President Mekhi.
