Nigeria is adopting technological tools to strengthen safety and security at its borders. This follows the approval of 52 billion naira to purchase e-border surveillance system back in 2019.
Nigeria has been battling with the problems of porous borders, a situation which makes it susceptible to external security threats. In fact, there are over more than a 100 border crossings including the unmanned areas that were often exploited for illegal crossings and irregular migration. Nigeria is now leveraging technology and innovation to deal with these threats and keep its borders safe.
With the use of technology, Nigeria developed the e-border solution to keep its borders safe and allow smooth flow of business activities between the country and its neighbours.
The e-border security mechanism was deployed to over 80 border crossings to provide real-time, 24/7 monitoring and intelligence, allowing the NIS to track better and manage border activities.
Also, the e-border system will facilitate co-operation among other cross border security agencies by enabling the sharing of critical intelligence.
The use of technology to tackle cross border crime could be crucial to tackling the various challenges plaguing Nigeria and its neighbours. It could also play a pivotal role in fighting insecurity and unlocking Africa’s food potential.
