Ghana has announced plans to hike electricity and water bills starting from October 1, 2024.
The Public Services Commission (PURC), in a statement on Saturday, September 28, announced that electricity tariffs will increase by 3.02 per cent and water prices by 1.86 per cent in the third quarter of 2024, effective October 1.
“Following the quarterly tariff review, the Commission wishes to inform the public that there will be a 3.02% increment in electricity tariffs and a 1.86% increment in water tariffs for the third quarter of 2024 for all categories of customers,” part of the statement read
The Commission said these increases were critical to safeguarding the financial stability of electricity providers such as the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Ghana Water Limited (GWL) and the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) while also protecting consumers.
PURC added that energy management needed to achieve 98% efficiency, which was important for the stability of the energy and water industry.
The management assured that it will continue to monitor the work of the power company to provide value for money and improve the quality of service to customers.
Meanwhile, the Ghanaian Association of Commerce (GUTA) has questioned the reason behind the recent increase in electricity and water prices, saying the increase will reduce consumer power. GUTA Public Relations Officer Joseph Paddy lamented that the price increase will cost Ghanaians their livelihood.
