MTN Group, the largest mobile operator in Africa, announced on Monday that it has formed a strategic alliance with UK-based video software company Synamedia to create a new streaming platform designed for mobile and fiber subscribers throughout Africa.
Since its inception in 1994, MTN Group has evolved from a provider of voice and data services to a technology media enterprise that also offers fintech, digital, and entertainment solutions in response to the decline in voice usage.
Selorm Adadevoh, the Group Chief Commercial Officer at MTN Group, stated, “We recognize a distinctive opportunity to revolutionize video consumption in Africa by providing high-quality, accessible, and relevant content.”
With a customer base of 291 million across 16 African markets, MTN Group aims to take advantage of the swift adoption of smartphones and the enhancement of telecommunications infrastructure on the continent, both of which have fueled the demand for video streaming services.

According to a joint statement from the companies, the upcoming service will utilize Synamedia’s cloud-based technologies to offer both linear television and video-on-demand content.
The platform will feature various monetization options, including subscription models, ad-supported content, and free streaming channels with targeted advertising.
Each market will benefit from a tailored content strategy that reflects local cultures, languages, and viewing preferences, the companies noted.
The collaboration will enter a competitive streaming landscape, where MultiChoice’s Showmax holds a significant presence alongside global players such as Netflix, Disney, Amazon Prime, and Apple TV.
