Nigeria and the United Arab Emirates (VAE) will meet in the coming days to address the ongoing challenges Nigerians face when obtaining visas.
The discussion aims to resolve concerns about visa restrictions and to strengthen diplomatic and economic ties between the two countries.
Many Nigerians, especially those looking for tourist visas, faced challenges despite years of diplomatic and economic relationships between the two countries.
During a meeting with UAE officials, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, the Minister for Foreign Affairs (State) confirmed Nigeria’s commitment to a partnership with the VAE, highlighting the deep economic ties between the two countries. “Dubai has become a favourable destination for many Nigerians,” she said. Approximately 12,000 Nigerians said they currently live in the United Arab Emirates, including specialists, students and workers.

She also announced that nearly one million Nigerians visited the VAE alone in 2015, spending over $1 billion on visas on purchases, tourism and other economic activities.
Despite this substantial financial input, Odumegwu-Ojukwu noted that economic ties between the two countries remained primarily one-sided. She highlighted the need to look into both sides’ power and favorable cooperation in sectors such as renewable energy.
The Minister expressed concern about visa restrictions and asked the VAE to provide clear visa guidelines to combat widespread uncertainty among Nigerians. Even among the top government officials, there was a lot of concern about the VAE visa guidelines. Nigerians are strongly invested in VAE real estate, tourism and business activities. We need to clarify this topic,” she said.
In response, Al-Sham Shuommegwoohuk congratulated her appointment and confirmed the United Arab Emirates’ commitment to fostering strong ties with Nigeria.
