Angola is taking major steps toward a cleaner and more sustainable energy future by expanding its natural gas production. The country aims to increase natural gas’s contribution to its energy mix to 25% in 2025, helping to reduce reliance on more polluting fuels while making better use of the country’s vast gas reserves—estimated at around 11 trillion cubic feet.
The country plans to achieve this by putting previously wasted gas to good use. Since 2013, Angola has been producing liquefied natural gas (LNG), and it is now working on expanding its production capacity. A major part of this expansion is the Quiluma and Maboqueiro (Q&M) project, two offshore gas fields expected to start operations in early 2026. These fields, managed by the New Gas Consortium, will supply even more gas to the existing Angola LNG project.
At the same time, Angola is also developing gas projects linked to its existing oil production. One of the most notable is the Sanha Lean Gas Connection project, launched in late 2024 by Chevron’s subsidiary, Cabinda Gulf Oil Company. With a $300 million investment, this project is set to boost Angola’s gas supply significantly.
Reducing pollution is also a major priority. Angola’s state-owned oil company, Sonangol, along with energy giants Chevron and TotalEnergies, is exploring ways to cut carbon emissions. Strategies include using biofuels, nature-based carbon offsets, and drone technology to monitor and reduce pollution in oil and gas operations.
Another innovative project, the Agogo Integrated West Hub development, features a first-of-its-kind offshore CO2 capture plant. Installed on the Ngoma Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) unit, this technology will help reduce emissions and improve efficiency.
Looking ahead, Angola is set to roll out its Gas Master Plan in 2025, a long-term 30-year strategy aimed at attracting foreign investment, improving market competitiveness, and promoting cleaner technologies.
Through these combined efforts, Angola is striving for a balanced approach—growing its economy while protecting the environment—as it transitions to a more sustainable energy future.
