The Société Maghrébine de Génie Civil (Somagec), Moroccan infrastructure firm has signed a $1.3 billion agreement to build a high-voltage power transmission link between Angola and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

This project aims to improve regional energy integration, enabling Angola to export its electricity surplus to neighboring countries, like the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

The DRC’s mining sector is a cornerstone of its economy, producing essential minerals like cobalt, lithium, and copper—key materials in the global energy transition and renewable energy industries. However, frequent power outages have hindered mining operations, slowing production and impacting economic growth.

With Angola generating 6,500 MW of electricity and 2,000 MW available for export, this interconnection will provide a steady power supply to key industries in the DRC and Zambia. The agreement follows a Build-Own-Operate-Transfer (BOOT) model, ensuring sustainability before eventual transfer to Angola’s National Electricity Transmission Network (RNT).

The initiative aligns with Morocco’s Africa-focused investment strategy, as Moroccan firms continue expanding in finance, real estate, fertilizers, and infrastructure across the continent.

Somagec Energy Holding LTD, a subsidiary of Somagec, has secured import-export energy licenses for Angola, the DRC, and Zambia and joined the Southern African Power Pool (SAPP) to facilitate regional energy trading.

For Angola, this partnership is part of its economic diversification plan, using private investments to modernize its energy infrastructure and generate an estimated $750 million in annual revenue. It also strengthens Morocco’s reputation as a reliable infrastructure partner in Africa.

This project builds on previous investments, including Somagec’s 2023 collaboration with Ducab Cables to construct 400 kilometers of transmission lines in Angola. Such efforts underscore the importance of regional energy cooperation in powering industries and driving sustainable economic growth across Africa.

These projects highlight Somagec’s expertise in energy infrastructure and its role in addressing Africa’s energy challenges.
