President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced a transformative energy initiative at the Mission 300 Africa Energy Summit in Tanzania, reaffirming Nigeria’s commitment to energy security, affordability, and sustainability.

The initiative aligns with the summit’s goal to provide 300 million Africans with affordable energy access by 2030.

Special Adviser on Media and Public Communication, Sunday Dare, described the plan as a “dynamic and compact initiative” that advances Africa’s energy agenda.

Highlighting the President’s focus on renewable energy, Dare emphasized Tinubu’s accelerated efforts in expanding Nigeria’s power generation capacity. “From solar projects to the Siemens initiative, the President is addressing Nigeria’s energy challenges head-on,” Dare noted.

The Siemens Project, initially launched under former President Buhari, has been intensified under Tinubu’s administration, targeting a significant increase in Nigeria’s energy capacity. Additionally, Dare emphasized the importance of international partnerships, such as the African Development Bank’s N75 billion commitment to Nigeria’s Rural Electrification Agency.

Speaking on the broader context, Finance Minister Wale Edun underscored the critical link between energy access and economic growth.

During a panel discussion at the summit, Edun highlighted Nigeria’s leadership in decentralized renewable energy (DRE) programs, citing the installation of 150 mini-grids and over a million solar panels.

Edun drew attention to Nigeria’s goal for universal energy access by 2030, emphasizing the profitability of renewable energy initiatives. “Energy, much like mobile telephony, can undergo a revolution that benefits all,” he stated. He also lauded private sector collaboration in bridging the electricity gap and enabling sustainable development.

The summit, attended by over 20 African leaders and global institutions such as the World Bank and AfDB, aims to harness Africa’s renewable energy potential while leveraging innovative financing mechanisms. The Dar es Salaam Energy Declaration, expected to be a key outcome, will detail action plans for achieving the summit’s ambitious goals.
