The Nigerian government has unveiled a new farmers registry to boost agricultural production and ensure effective implementation of government policies. The farmer registry would link each farmer’s National Identity Number to their farmland and relevant data, including crop or livestock type and farm size. This is to ensure that the Ministry of Agriculture implements its policies and programs independently while providing real-time monitoring and tracking via digital dashboards.
Also, through the NIN-enabled registry, the government is hoping to achieve transparency, scalability, and efficiency in the agriculture sector, helping the government deliver better-targeted services and financial support directly to farmers.
The initiative aims to transform the provision of agricultural benefits by facilitating distinct identification of farmers and minimising the potential for fraud, thereby promoting inclusivity and enhancing food security throughout Nigeria.
In a statement, the government shed more light on the new initiative noting that ”By adopting this card, we can uniquely identify all farmers, provide multiple agricultural services through the card in a manner that eliminates risks and fraud, and also provide end-to-end visibility within the agricultural value chain, thus enabling scalability.”

In addition, the registry has been created to provide NIN-enabled cards to farmers regardless of their banking status, offering various wallets for transactions, and guaranteeing accessibility to government support in even the most remote areas. Through this, the farmers can easily access subsidies, loans, welfare payments, and additional services.
