The Nigerian government has announced plans to distribute ₦75,000 cash as part of its social safety program for the poor and most vulnerable in the country.
The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, announced the cash transfer program when he featured on a television program on Wednesday, noting that the program will be deployed across the 36 states of the federation through the National Identity Number system.
Yilwatda noted that the program is part of President Bola Tinubu’s directive to address rising poverty level and create a more inclusive social safety net for the people. The program will also enhance the digital identities of low-income Nigerians by collaborating with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) to increase NIN registrations. According to Yilwatda, this will help streamline the process and ensure the most vulnerable populations are included in the database.
He noted “The target of the president is that we should target 15 million households. And an average household is about 4 to 5. We are discussing here roughly about 70 million households with about N75,000 per person this year,”.

The minister highlighted the significance of utilizing technology to enhance the efficiency, transparency, and accountability of the cash transfer program. He further noted that implementing digital registration would minimise errors, facilitate better tracking, and guarantee that financial assistance reaches those who require it the most.
