Egypt and Liberia have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to cooperate in groundwater development. The agreement, was signed by the Lakes Protection and Fish Resources Development Authority of Egypt (LPRDA) and the National Fisheries and Aquaculture Authority of Liberia (NFAA). It aims to promote sustainable development and commercialization in the fishing industry.
The agreement comes as Egypt’s political leaders are promoting international cooperation to address issues such as peace and security, combating terrorism, conflict resolution and the financial impact of global events like the war in Ukraine, and climate change.
The agreement with Liberia focuses on several key areas, including improving the management of the fisheries sector, preventing illegal fishing, promoting the development of aquaculture, sharing knowledge, strengthening scientific research, and supporting trade between Egypt and Liberia.
LPRDA Director General Hussein Farahat welcomed the agreement. He emphasized the importance of fisheries for Egypt’s Food Security and Sustainable Development Goals and noted Egypt’s experience in lake and fisheries management. He expressed gratitude to the Liberian delegation for the visit and reiterated Egypt’s commitment to promoting cooperation in the African fisheries sector through leadership that promotes sustainable development.
He described Egypt’s fishing and irrigation capabilities in the Mediterranean and the Red Sea. Farhat added that Egypt is committed to providing technical and logistical support to African countries in the fields of fisheries, aquaculture and fish through training and consultancy on security management.
NFAA Director General Emma Catherine Metieh expressed satisfaction with the agreement, stating that the agreement is in line with Liberia’s development process “Lift”, which is important for agricultural farming, including aquaculture. He said he would like to thank the President of Liberia, President Abdel Fattah El Sisi and the Egyptian people. Medih also underlined Liberia’s determination to encourage investment in aquaculture by creating a conducive environment and providing incentives to investors.
The meeting was attended by a large number of Egyptians, including Osama Mohammed Eissa from the Ministry of Planning and Economic Development and several LPRDA officials. Liberian representatives included Zizi A.S. Kpadeh from the NFAA and Amal Amin Atiya from the Liberian Embassy.
The LPRDA said that this partnership demonstrates Egypt’s commitment to strengthening African cooperation and sustainable development, contributing to economic integration and development that improves the livelihoods of African citizens. The company emphasizes its belief in the importance of international cooperation to solve different problems in the aquaculture industry.
