The Federal government of Nigeria through the Nigerian Shippers Council, has unveiled plans to commence international cargo tracking a move aimed at boosting revenue collection and enhancing security.
The Executive Secretary of the Council Mr Pius Akutah disclosed in Lagos on Monday.
Akuta, represented by the Director of Special Duties of the National Security Council, Mustapha Zubairu, said the launch of the ICTN was in line with the directive of President Bola Tinubu and led to diversification of revenue in the target.
He added “The NSC has unveiled plans to kick off the implementation of the ICTN. The platform is an automated scheme, which can determine the type and volume of cargo that are imported into the country through seaports within a specific period. The ICTN will also boost Nigeria’s security and enhance the Federal Government’s revenue from the seaports,”
Akuta also said that the Ministry of National Security is still working to implement some innovations such as the adoption and operation of content management to improve the internal working procedures of the council.
In addition, he said that the global transition to e-commerce and digital trade provides the National Shippers Council with the opportunity to enhance its digital capabilities and become a leader in space operations, ports, customs and supply chain management.
“Through the adoption of blockchain, Internet of Things, and other emerging technologies, the NSC can facilitate faster, more transparent, and cost-efficient trade,” he maintained.
He added that the National Shippers Council is involved in a government-private partnership that supports the development of ports, shipping facilities and transportation to provide opportunities to work with private investors who can help alleviate housing problems.
