Egypt has taken significant strides in advancing its renewable energy ambitions through strategic partnerships with Alcazar Energy, Voltalia, and TAQA Arabia.
Several Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) have been signed to develop over 5.2 GW of green energy projects, aligning with the nation’s Vision 2030 goals to reduce fossil fuel reliance, enhance grid stability, and promote sustainability.
Alcazar Energy’s partnership with the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC) and the New and Renewable Energy Authority (NREA) focuses on developing a 2 GW onshore wind farm.
Once operational, the wind farm will significantly expand the country’s renewable energy capacity, marking a major milestone in the transition to green energy.
In a separate MoU, Voltalia and TAQA Arabia aim to repower the historic Zafarana wind farms with an innovative hybrid renewable energy solution. This project will integrate wind and solar technologies to deliver a combined capacity of up to 3 GW.
Located southeast of Cairo, Zafarana will become Egypt’s first facility combining 1.1 GW of wind energy and 2.1 GW of solar power. The first phase is expected to be commissioned by 2028, leveraging Zafarana’s strong wind conditions and abundant solar resources.
These projects involve detailed studies to optimize execution, including assessments of wind dynamics, bird migration patterns, solar irradiation, and environmental factors. Egypt’s Minister of Electricity, Mahmoud Esmat, highlighted the critical role of renewable energy in diversifying the energy mix, cutting carbon emissions, and encouraging private-sector participation. Plans to incorporate battery storage systems further demonstrate Egypt’s focus on energy innovation and grid stability.
These initiatives also reflect the global nature of Egypt’s renewable energy strategy, as partnerships with international entities bring expertise and advanced technology to the projects. With participants like Voltalia CEO Sébastien Clerc and TAQA Arabia CEO Pakinam Kafafi, the ventures signal Egypt’s leadership in the green energy transformation within the MENA region.
