Ghana has officially launched its 5G network, demonstrating a transformative moment in its journey toward digital advancement.
This major milestone was celebrated on November 1, 2024, in Accra, with the Minister for Communications and Digitalisation, Mrs. Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, and President Nana Akufo-Addo in attendance.
Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful outlined Ghana’s transition from the 1990s’ rudimentary 1G voice communication to 5G’s revolutionary potential. From the introduction of SMS in 2G to the high-speed data capabilities of 4G, each technological advancement has prepared the way for the revolutionary potential of 5G.
President Akufo-Addo highlighted that 5G is more than an improvement in internet speed; it is a foundation for creating a robust digital economy. This new network will catalyze innovation across various sectors, including healthcare, education, agriculture, and security.
The President emphasized that Ghana’s Digital Transformation Agenda aims to establish an inclusive digital ecosystem, which is crucial for job creation, economic diversification, and strengthening Ghana’s global competitiveness. He noted, “Digital technology is no longer an option, but an imperative.”
The network infrastructure is spearheaded by NextGen Infraco, a partnership between the Ghanaian government and a consortium of telecommunications companies, including Nokia, Tech Mahindra, and local telcos.
NextGen’s Managing Director, Tenu Awoonor, affirmed the consortium’s commitment to ensuring Ghana’s investment in 5G yields economic and social benefits, promoting connectivity that empowers all citizens—from farmers to students and small business owners.
To encourage the development of digital skills, Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful announced the establishment of a Digital Youth Hub at the University of Ghana, with plans to expand similar initiatives across the country.
According to her, by 2026, the 5G rollout—which is currently focusing on major cities like Accra, Kumasi, and Takoradi—should have nationwide coverage.
Ghana’s 5G network is expected to transform the country’s digital ecosystem, foster an environment ripe for growth, inclusivity, and technological advancement.
