Saudi Arabia’s telecommunications company, Mobily, has partnered with Telecom Egypt to establish the first submarine cable connecting the two nations across the Red Sea.

This landmark collaboration marks the installation of a subsea cable with landing stations in Duba, Saudi Arabia, and Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt.

Owned entirely by Mobily, the cable will play a critical role in strengthening Saudi Arabia’s position as a telecommunications hub. The project significantly expands Mobily’s existing infrastructure, connecting the Arabian Gulf to Telecom Egypt’s extensive landing points.

By linking Saudi Arabia and Egypt directly, Mobily gains access to various subsea cable systems terminating in Egypt, providing connectivity between Asia, Africa, and Europe.

Currently, Egypt hosts 18 subsea cable systems, expected to rise to 22 by next year, while Saudi Arabia is increasing its capacity from 20 to 27 cables. Mobily’s new cable will, therefore, address growing regional demand for internet services, enhancing network reliability and expanding international reach.

Mohamed Nasr, Managing Director and CEO of Telecom Egypt, underscored the significance of this collaboration, which aligns with Telecom Egypt’s objectives to bolster international telecom infrastructure. As part of this strategy, Telecom Egypt is developing additional routes connecting Sharm El-Sheikh to the Mediterranean, thus diversifying global subsea network pathways.

Nasr expressed confidence that the partnership with Mobily will cater to the region’s rising demand for high-capacity connectivity while driving growth for Egypt’s ICT sector. “Telecom Egypt is dedicated to advancing the international telecommunications infrastructure by enhancing the geographical diversity of the global subsea cable networks,” he added.

The Mobily-Telecom Egypt cable project is expected to improve service reliability, meet rising connectivity demands, and support Saudi Arabia’s and Egypt’s growing ICT sectors. This new infrastructure will ultimately allow both countries to deliver cutting-edge digital solutions to their customers.
