Google has committed ₦2.8 billion through its philanthropic arm, Google.org, to enhance artificial intelligence (AI) talent development across Nigeria.
Announced in Abuja, this funding is a key part of Google’s investment in Sub-Saharan Africa, focusing on developing Nigeria’s digital and AI capabilities.
This support aligns with the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation & Digital Economy’s initiatives aimed at preparing a tech-savvy workforce ready to thrive in an AI-driven global economy.
Matt Brittin, Google’s President for Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, noted the transformative potential of AI for Nigeria, highlighting the country’s strategic position in Africa’s digital transformation.
“Google sees Nigeria’s digital ambition as a beacon for Africa’s own journey in digital transformation,” he said.
The grant will support three major programs: the DeepTech Ready Upskilling Programme, the Experience AI Programme, and the Government AI Campus Programme.
Through the DeepTech Ready initiative, 20,000 young Nigerians will receive training in data science and AI, equipping them for careers in this rapidly growing sector.
The Experience AI Programme, developed with the Raspberry Pi Foundation, will train 25,000 educators to teach AI concepts to 125,000 young learners, inspiring future AI innovators.
Meanwhile, the Government AI Campus will train public servants in AI policy, ensuring that regulatory frameworks keep pace with AI advancements.
In addition to talent development, Google has launched an AI Fund in collaboration with the National Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics (NCAIR), which will provide ten Nigerian startups with N100 million each. This support includes mentorship, $3.5 million in Google Cloud Credits, and technical assistance.
These startups address critical areas, including healthcare, security, and agriculture, through AI-powered solutions tailored to Nigeria’s unique challenges.
Minister Bosun Tijani hailed the partnership as a pivotal move towards positioning Nigeria as a leader in AI. “This support from Google is a testament to our commitment to a more inclusive and innovative future,” he said.
