As part of the agreement, the EU will fund Nigeria’s off grid electricity projects with a focus on renewable energy, rural electrification and energy efficiency.
In addition, the agreement will enable 154,000 people to access electricity while connecting 30,000 others to clean cooking gas. Also, it will close the gap of 100 million Nigerians not having access to adequate electricity.
Nigeria’s power sector has been in a state of comatose for many years despite billions of dollars investment and government intervention. Presently, the country hovers around 5,000 megawatts while battling incessant grid collapse, vandalism, estimated billing, energy theft and other challenges. With this EU fund, the government intends to tackle the problems and ensure improved power supply.

The EU fund is part of the Nigerian Energy Support programme launched in 2013 to ensure adequate power supply and access to energy especially in rural areas. It was co-funded by the European Union and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development in partnership with the Ministry of Power.
