Three West African nations—Benin, Ghana, and Togo—have officially launched a free roaming initiative under the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) roaming framework.
This initiative enables mobile users in these countries to use their mobile services without incurring international roaming fees. The program is a significant milestone in advancing regional integration and improving communication and business connectivity.
The announcement comes after Ghana implemented a similar agreement with Côte d’Ivoire in February 2024. Now, Ghana has extended this free roaming initiative to Benin and Togo, following the successful agreement between Benin and Ghana, which took effect in July 2024.
Under the new arrangement, subscribers from Benin and Togo visiting Ghana can make calls and send SMS messages at local rates for up to 30 consecutive days, with free incoming calls.
Similarly, Ghanaian visitors to Benin and Togo will benefit from the same privileges. This initiative aims to reduce the inconvenience of high roaming fees and the necessity of switching SIM cards when traveling across these borders.
Speaking at the launch in Accra, Ghana’s Deputy Minister for Communications and Digitalisation, Charles Acheampong, praised the initiative, calling it a significant step toward creating a borderless communication system within West Africa. He emphasized that the initiative aligns with the ECOWAS vision of seamless connectivity and regional cooperation.
The National Communications Authority (NCA) of Ghana, along with telecommunications authorities from Benin and Togo, are responsible for implementing the initiative. They are also collaborating with mobile network operators to ensure the program’s success.
The initiative is expected to bolster economic ties and encourage greater regional travel. Dr. Joe Anokye, Director General of the NCA, stressed the program’s long-term benefits for both commerce and tourism. He also urged stakeholders to monitor and assess the initiative’s performance to ensure it meets its goals.
The launch is part of ECOWAS’ broader efforts to strengthen regional integration, enhance connectivity, and stimulate economic growth across West Africa.
